CN Railway
April 16th, 2007
Councillor O’Connell along with Councillor McLean, brought forth a Motion asking Council to resolve to CN to recognize the City of Pickering as an “Urban” location thus determining a more appropriate speed of which their trains will maintain while traveling through our urban neighbourhoods. Additionally, Councillor O’Connell is requesting for CN to update their travel schedules to take into account our residential urban locations and thus eliminate the use of whistles.
At the end of February Councillor O’Connell asked staff for an update concerning the condition of the tracks along the Twin Rivers and Sheppard area, only two weeks later the derailment on the CN railway occurred. Although we have yet to hear of the exact cause of this derailment, many including Councillor O’Connell speculate that the weather along with the speed at which the train was traveling played a role in this accident. “CN needs to recognize the City of Pickering as an Urban area and reduce the speeds of their trains while traveling through our City. The City of Pickering is no longer just a ‘cow crossing’ and we need to protect the safety of our residents.”
This Motion was also carried.
